imply that the screenwriter should be lauded instead of the director, ultimately the book s tone encourages us to consider film much of a collaborative medium than we do And it reaffirms something I think many people have always thought that if the director of a film did not write the screenplay, any claim he or she has to being its true author is nonsense Kipen s metaphor for the screenwriter director relationship is novelist editor I think an alternative metaphor might be author translator There are excellent translations and there are poor ones There are certainly rare translations that may even improve upon the original text But they re still translations The kind of work being done is different.I just saw The Social Network a few nights ago and loved it, incidentally the film belongs much to Aaron Sorkin than it does to David Fincher Both personalities are certainly evident Fincher s personality shows up several times, most notably in the rowing scene but the construction of the film, the story, even the ambitions, attitudes, and life paths of the characters bring to mind Sorkin s work in A Few Good Men, The West Wing, and even Studio 60 And yet I was talking about the film with a friend last night, and she said, I loved that movie I love all his stuff Sorkin I don t know who that is I m talking about the Fight Club guy Ah Sigh flag Like see review Feb 11, 2008 pronged attack In part one, he dismantles the auteur theory and presents a convincing argument that screenwriters are the guiding creative geniuses behind the best films In part two, he offers a compendium of mini biographies of great screenwriters past and present Who wrote Casablanca Who wrote Twelve Monkeys Who wrote Dead Girls Don t Tango What else did they write It all makes The Schreiber Theory an engaging read and a one of a kind reference for movie lovers and film students alike flag Like see review Dec 28, 2008 Ben rated it really liked it Kipen s manifesto is lively and concise, if not terribly in depth The first half sketches an argument for a writer centric film history, but serves as an indictment of auteur theory His thesis isn t so much that we should adopt The Schreiber Theory as that it is at least as good as auteur theory, and writers deserve consideration. The second half of the book is a few capsule profiles of writers whose work has been of a certain quality and often focused on repeated themes flag Like see review Jan 20, 2014 Mary Beth rated it really liked it Shelves nonfiction Kipen s book is much manifesto than densely laid out history, and as such it s lively and provocative, if sometimes a bit shallow Still, his passionate argument ranking screenwriters above directors in importance makes an intriguing attack on the traditional auteur theory, and his mini bios of major screenwriters and lists of their work provide much inspiration for future movie watching flag Like see review Aug 09, 2010 Cambra added it I kind of lost interest during the introduction, when he admits he just wants to debunk the auteur theory than he wants to prove or argue anything else I guess I can give it 10 pages though Yeah, no I can t flag Like see an end to the auteurist theory of film criticism for one screenwriter centric Sure, why not, though it doesn t address the inherent problem of assigning credit blame for such a collaborative project Hollywood be without good, consistant writerswell, they where they are now mostly in the toilet flag Like see review Sep 29, 2010 David rated it liked it This isn t so much the Schreiber Theory as an argument against the auteur theory The author is unable to land anything than a glancing blow to auteurism however. The second half of this little book provides nice little capsules of prominent study of film and that a consistent and accurate view would be studying screenwriters works I think it s an argument definitely worth looking into Very intriguing flag Like see review View 1 comment
