    1. Nice art, good adventure, interesting setting. The characters are a bit generic so far, but that may change as we spend more time with them. This is definitely a "beginning" book with the main adventure barely underway at the end.

    2. What if man journeyed into space in 1869, not 1969? In beautiful , steampunk graphic novelCastle in the Stars: The Space Race of 1869, we follow Séraphin and his father who build a fantastical ethership to explore the skies. We summon you to pick up this book and take to the skies along them for a fantastical ride!

    3. A steampunk, graphic novel? YES!! Well described as a cross between Japanese manga and Jules Verne, this book has been translated from French to English. At the heart of the story is the mysterious element of aether, which is thought to be usable to power ships for interplanetary travel. Young Seraphin and his engineer father are reeling from the loss of their intrepid mother/wife, whose aether experiment went too high in the atmosphere. They are invited to Germany to retrieve her journal, and t [...]

    4. Jules Verne meets Miyazaki, indeed. It's an incredibly apt description, one that I had in mind as I was reading it, before seeing the exact same thing on the blurb here at . This is the first of three books, and it's a bit heavy on the exposition, a bit slow. But I found mix of aethernautics and espionage quite interesting enough to keep me reading, and the art is just gorgeous. King Ludwig (you know, the Mad, with the castles?) plays an important role, one that looks to be bigger in coming book [...]

    6. Wow, this was fantastic.I saw this beautiful Graphic Novel last year for the first time and fell immediately in love with the stunning artwork Now a few month later I finally own this beauty and am still in love. The story is unique and fun , it`s a bit funny that its set in german areas I like the characters and the idea of emperor Ludwid II having a Steampunk like flying machine to find the aether

    7. 3.5 estrellas. Di [...]

    8. The first in a series, this book imagines the pace race taking place in the mid nineteenth century. Gorgeous artwork and a solid storyline though I wish it hadn’t ended on such a cliffhanger.

    9. What a delightful book! Alternate history/steampunk in the vein of Jules Verne, loaded with information while also being purely fanciful. And a great joke about the ubiquity of pretzels in Germany.

    10. Translated from the original French, this graphic novel explores an alternative history where the mysterious element of aether is being quested for in the heights of the atmosphere by going up in balloons. Seraphin’s mother was lost after such a quest. Now Seraphin and his father are invited to build a gigantic balloon vessel to continue her search. Told in beautiful watercolor images with fine details and nods to Japanese manga, this large graphic novel invites readers into a new world. With [...]

    13. One of the most beautiful comics I have ever laid my hands on. Starts with the wonderful cover and continues with every page. And the story doesn´t fall short behind the artwork either. Just an extraordinary beauty of a printed book (eat dust ebook you can´t replicate the haptic of the cover artwork!). Just prey that someday there will be an english edition of the same quality for more peoples delight.

    14. In search of the mysterious element known as aether, Claire Dulac flew her hot air balloon toward the edge of our stratosphere-and never returned. Her husband, genius engineer Archibald Dulac, is certain that she is forever lost. Her son, Seraphin, still holds out hope. One year after her disappearance, Seraphin and his father are delivered a tantalizing clue: a letter from an unknown sender who claims to have Claire's lost logbook. The letter summons them to a Bavarian castle, where an ambitiou [...]

    16. What if the great drive to be the first nation in space wasn't the race between the United States and the Soviet Union in the 1950s but between France and Germany in the 1860s? That's the premise of this graphic novel. Frenchman Archibald Dulac's wife conducts an experiment to find aether, the supposed matter that exists in space between the earth's atmosphere and other celestial objects. The book assumes aether is real, though the wife has to go extremely high in a hot air balloon to find it. H [...]

    17. The space race of 1869 involves the existence of aether, a mysterious substance that could potentially allow for travel between the stars--if it exists. Seraphin's mother disappeared into the stratosphere in the search for aether, leaving behind her husband Archibald and son. A year later, they get a mysterious note that says her logbook has been discovered, and they must instantly come to Bavaria. Seraphin's father is not pleased, but eventually goes--and they nearly get kidnapped by Prussian a [...]

    18. This is a steampunk story of a family and the German kingdoms of 1869. The family is a standard mother, father, and son at the beginning, but the mother is quickly lost to setup the rest of the tale. The mother was an adventurer and her loss inspires the son to follow in her footsteps and adventure into the aether (space). The father is a brilliant engineer.A year after the loss of the mother, the father and son receive a letter from the Bavarian king. He says he has the mother's log book and in [...]

    19. "It was then, when the postman brought the evening mail that my adventure began."Seraphin's mother was an adventurer in search of mythical worlds when she disappeared. So when a mysterious letter arrives stating that his mother's logbook has been found, Seraphin and his father decide to journey to Bavaria to meet with the author of the letter, whoever that might be. Little do they know of the intrigue that they are about to become involved in. First, they are nearly kidnapped by Prussians at th [...]

    20. The time is the late 1800s. The place is Europe. Scientists want to find the mysterious element that will let man travel to space. Governments want to control it so they have power over others. One boy wants to follow in his mom’s footsteps as an aviator and explorer to protect the elusive aether from those who would exploit it.Castle in the Stars: The Space Race of 1869 by Alex Alice is a steampunk graphic novel that moves from Paris to Munich with scenes in Berlin. Young explorer Seraphin tr [...]

    21. Excellent piece of steampunk for the 8-12 age range! Set in an alternate version of 1869's German Empire this is an exciting story of spies, air flight and derring-do. We are given a brief synopsis of the German states at the time, specifically Bavaria, Prussia, Austria and Germany, so as to understand the political espionage going on. Three children find there is a Prussian spy amongst the Bavarian court and the "Knights of Aether" are trying to lure him out. Meanwhile, a great ship is being co [...]

    22. This was not at all what I expected! I thought this would be a steampunk adventure, and it is, but I didn't realize it would include Mad King Ludwig of many German castles. In this alternate history, it's Ludwig who is trying to fund a ship powered by aether that will take him and others to the stars. The illustrations were lovely! The detail is beautiful. My only complaint is that the edges of the word balloons sometimes looked half orange and other times looked half white, and some od the font [...]

    23. After Seraphin’s mother disappears while searching for aether, her lost logbook surfaces in Bavaria and Seraphin and his father are called to retrieve it. But the king that holds the logbook longs to conquer the stars himself. Can Seraphin and his father avoid the earthly dangers as well as those held in space? This is a great middle grade steampunk graphic novel that takes readers on a “what if” journey: what if space travel began in 1869 and not 1969? The artwork is amazing though, at tim [...]
