many cessationists will label him due to their doctrinal views and out of their intense disgust with some of carnal excesses present in the Charismatic and Pentecostal denominations So it s from the perspective of a continualist that I write this book review. What I liked about this book Mr Bolz s emphasis on love and just how high a priority it should be especially among those who are prophesying or seeking to prophesy.I LOVED the stories he shared and I think were the greatest asset of the book itself.I also enjoyed the practical advice he gave towards the end of the book regarding the prophetic ministry and the gift of prophecy He speaks from experience with honest reflection and a humility that should be admired and followed I think his advice is sound and wise It will help many mature both in their prophetic gifts and their character.A couple quotes from the book I liked, If someone prays over you, you have every right to say you don t agree You never need to say it in a mean or conflict laden way, you get to say it through encouragement Pg 1886 Kindle version You are not rejecting a person if you reject his words You get to receive the person with kindness and compassion and treat him as a human being If someone gets offended and feels rejected just because you rejected his words, then stay away from him, because he has unhealthy heart boundaries that cause him to use prophecy to control or manipulate the people around him 1888 Kindle Version The prophetic gift was never given with the understanding that the receiver would suddenly have power over others, or special authority, because of inside information Prophecy is a demonstration of relational power, not political power Pg 1894 Kindle If you won t allow someone to evaluate what you are saying or give you feedback when you prophesy to him, then you are essentially saying you are important and have authority, wisdom, and connection to what you are prophesying about than he does That is the exact opposite goal of prophecy Prophecy is supposed to connect people to the world around them and the God who loves them, not place you in the center of the equation Pg 1895 Kindle What I didn t like It almost pains me to mention what I didn t like because I found so many things in the book encouraging and refreshing and I really respect Mr Bolz. There were some times in the book where he overemphasized love and made some blanket statements that could lead people to some false conclusions doctrines. For example, on page 647 Kindle edition the author wrote, You cannot be a continually prophetic voice if you are in conflict with the world that God loves I suspect the author was speaking from a place of seeing a lot of angry and contentious people with character issues who use a prophetic gift as a means to beat up on people, especially the world I call such people Darth Vader Prophets But Mr Bolz s statement is quite blanket and can leave people with the impression that we should be loved by the world and always get along with her If that s what he s saying, then such a message is not biblically nor historically accurate The world will hate us and Jesus said as much in Matt 5 11 12 and John 15 18 And James wrote that to be friend of the world is to enmity with God Jame 4 4 Plus most of the Old Testament prophets and many of the New Testament Apostles were hated.I also wondered if he has embraced the doctrine of Christian Universalism because said, So although there are still very important promises and purposes on the Jewish people that we need to treasure and look forward to, the Spirit of God is on all of humanity so that all will be restored to his full grace Pg 809 kindle ed There were a handful of other blanket statements that I took issue with as well. But probably my biggest criticism was that Mr Bolz didn t engage in good exegesis of the scriptures to support his message of love and valuing people as much as I think he needed to.For example Mr Bolz quoted the book of Revelation in such a way as to emphasize how much God loves the church Revelation does speak of God loving the church but I believe Mr Bolz went too far and basically said that the book of Revelation was about the church Revelation 1 1 makes it quite clear that the book is a revelation about Jesus Christ Perhaps he didn t intend to say or imply that Revelation was about the church but his words and arguments led me to believe that s what he was saying Overall I liked the book and will read of his stuff For the reasons listed above I can only give it 3 stars but hope that my objections and criticisms won t stop people from reading it, especially those involved or interested in the prophetic ministry And I hope the Mr Bolz reaches people with his prophetic ministry much God loves them Fair enough, as long as this does not replace genuine and lasting connection which probably can t be accelerated Challenged by what he says about if we are always complaining and criticising we can not have an authority into that situation e.g in politics and in pop culture we only have authority over that which we love However, that should not stop us speaking truth to power and pointing out the hypocrisy of Christian leaders when it is damaging people He uses the story of Agabus to show how the role of the prophet has changed it s not just about completely accurate information or revelation from one person that all must follow actually Paul had already heard from God and Agabus was slightly wrong but still a good respected prophet it was about discerning the will of God together and about connection and relationship Love covers even when we are wrong Think that what he teaches about discernment being a conversation starter and not the message is excellent Chp.6 we start talking to God about what we are feeling discernment especially of the bad is not hard as God has given us natural intuition but we then need to seek the mind of the Spirit about what we have discerned And I like him coming out so strongly about judgement prophecies Also love his emphasis on partnership with God rather than being directed by God he works like a Father loving to see his sons grow rather than a commander who doesn t trust you to make decisions yourself Love what he says about revelation being progressive and a wandering journey and so it is important to journal and remember what God has said or shown you Chp.7 The weakness is the same as in many of these books so personal and experienced based and lacks awareness of the theological and historical contexts in which to place his own personal experience of the Spirit But a good version of this kind of book flag Like see review Jun 14, 2018 Becca rated it really liked it Shelves christian, 2018, i own these little narrow than Woodward s whose definition I prefer but they are generally on the same page I was thankful that Bolz discussed messing up quite frankly, and that getting it wrong is just as important as getting it right , and further sheds light on details how we give grace to speakers who are new, but if a new prophetic gets something wrong, we shun him herand that isn t the way it should be.Bolz absolutely nails the sins that people in these ministries struggle with and the things behaviors to watch out for These sections were fantastic Still, it s always good to read different hearts The ultimate starting point and end goal is love to encourage and build up Even in the case that we may discern a bad report, how do we navigate it with wisdom and love to build up and reveal the heart of the Father This quote succinctly sums this point up, True prophetic ministry looks for the gold in the midst of the dirt of people s lives Kris VallottonI also appreciate the practical aspects that the author added in towards the last two chapters on how to steward the gift of prophecy responsibly through accountability. One of the greatest strengths in the book is the personal stories and experiences the author brings in to illustrate and help us relate to the points he made However, herein also lies its weakness, as it is with writings that are experience based, that is, the shallow depth in theology I d have loved if the author added pages to help readers understand the topic on the prophetic biblically Nonetheless, I still think that the author brought forth an
