rural community in New Hampshire, they discover four bodies, carelessly slain The names raise a red flag in the Intelligence community, beginning calls high up the chain of command With ties to all those slain, one name being suggested as a potential shooter is Scot Harvath, but could he really have killed these people It turns out not, as Harvath is aboard a covert plane somewhere in Russia, chained to a seat by mercenaries who have no worries about treating their prisoner poorly When the plane goes down, Harvath is the only survivor, but perhaps not for long He is in the middle of the Russian wilderness during the height of winter, with only the howling of the wind and wolves to keep him company If he wants to stay alive, he will have to use all his training to find safety In Moscow, the news of the crash raises the ire of senior officials, who had hoped for a smooth snatch and grab of the Intelligence operative Now, they will have to locate the wreckage and capture Harvath again In Washington, those close to Harvath cannot believe that he would be responsible, but know that he was in New Hampshire They discover that he may have been covertly removed from the country and begin their own mission to extricate him, while not tipping the balance of international diplomacy Russia has all but declared war on America with such an act, but that is for the politicians to iron out While working on a plan to get to safety, Harvath will have to survive and stay off the proverbial radar When he comes to a small community near the Finnish border, he does all he can to stay alive and one step ahead of his captors The race is on to find Harvath and to the winner comes the spoils With an international disaster looming below the surface, the new Cold War could be close Thor delivers again with a stellar novel that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat and Harvath donning a few scars Recommended for fans of the series as well as the reader who loves thrillers of an espionage and political flavour.I have loved most every one of the Harvath thrillers that Thor has penned, finding myself in the middle of their action and political fallout Thor is able to capture the essence of the story and add his own political flavouring, which keeps the reader wondering if this could actually happen in today s world Harvath has lasted for eighteen previous novels, so his scars are plentiful and his stubbornness on point The reader can sense something else fuelling him in this piece, that being the loss of another loved one to those who would see him destroyed While somewhat reflective on all that he has done in life, there is also a strong sense that Harvath needs to bring about revenge for the loss of a loved one Thor adds some other interesting information tied to the gathering in New Hampshire, which the reader can discover as they make their way through the narrative Packed with many returning characters, Thor entertains with some of the unique individuals who appear in many of the nineteen books this series have been published These characters work well together and blend effectively to create a strong narrative and exciting story Speaking of the story, it remains strong and kept moving in a forward direction, offering interesting perspectives for those who enjoy espionage with a political angle Thor has been able to keep his stories strong and uses the current political and social situation to fuel the narrative, rather than relying on past read Islamic terror themes that have long since been flogged to death While I know the aches and pains must be getting quite troublesome, I wonder if there is another novel or two left in Scot Harvath, or ideas that Thor still wants to tackle.Kudos, Mr Thor, for a wonderful addition to the series I cannot wait to see what else you have for us and hope your fans enjoy this piece as much as I did.Love hate the review An ever growing collection of others appears cowboy up heroics that has become a dying breed in both our world and the world of fiction.Brad Thor is another hero of mine He is a beacon of conservative light in a literary field mostly made up of authors with contrary positions In the crazy world in which we presently live, this makes me appreciate Thor even His latest novel, BACKLASH, is filled with classic U.S vs Russia gameplay that makes you feel as if it was written at the height of the Cold War, well supplanted in the Reagan era The action takes place in the present, and the result is a politically charged thriller that may be Thor s finest work Once again, he has demonstrated why he is the modern day successor to the late, great Tom Clancy There will be killing till the score is paid That quote from Homer s epic, THE ODYSSEY, begins this great novel and pretty much sums up what is to follow in a succinctly powerful sentence The story opens with a flight of military men all escorting one very important passenger, who is hooded and chained in place so as to not bring harm to any of the armed men around him The image calls to mind the opening sequence of Christopher Nolan s final Dark Knight film, which featured the supervillain Bane in a similar position Much like the plane that Bane was on, things do not end well for this flight or most of the people on board, as it crashes into the frozen tundra that is the Murmansk Oblast region of Russia. At the same time, a police chief from New Hampshire is placing a call into the CIA because of a murder scene he came upon A house on Governors Island contains four corpses It is obvious to the chief that these people had been killed by a skilled assassin, and judging from the mess left behind, someone from that household was taken against his or her will.Successive chapters reveal the details of these two mini mysteries Among the deceased from the home in New Hampshire are the founder of The Carlton Group, Reed Carlton his successor, Lydia Ryan and Lara Cordero, the fianc e of former Special Forces and current Carlton Group primary operative Scot Harvath It turns out that the gathering was the clandestine wedding of Harvath and Cordero, a sacred event that was invaded by enemy forces who took the lives of the people closest to Harvath obviously with the intent of sending a message. This information now reveals the identity of the masked prisoner on the ill fated Russian flight With countless enemies made around the globe over his many years of service, it could have been almost any group that had it in for Harvath However, the wedding was so close to the vest that it had to have been someone on the inside who gave up that location to the Russian terrorists who stormed the ceremony and took Harvath with them Bringing him back to Russia is a huge win for Russian forces, and one that particularly humiliates the American President as well as the entire U.S intelligence community. With that plane crash landing, Harvath is fortunate to have survived and suffered only minor injuries He is strong enough, and filled with enough rage, to promptly take out all of the remaining Russian military men from the plane He also is able to leave the head of the mission alone to die a painful death as his lower extremities are crushed beyond help The only issue now is for an unarmed Harvath, without any form of communication, to survive in the frozen landscape in this stark part of Russia, which also happens to be in the midst of a killer blizzard. It is at this point where BACKLASH shows off Thor s finest writing, which has never been seen in any of his previous books We are able to enjoy a man versus wilderness scenario that could have been stripped right off the pages of a Jack London novel I so thoroughly enjoyed this portion of the story that I didn t want it to end But I knew I had to prepare myself for an ending that most likely would depict revenge like we have never seen before in any prior installment of this stellar series.Harvath cannot get to safety by himself and is fortunate to make the acquaintance of a Russian doctor named Christina Christina has no love lost for the Russian military as her husband was a casualty of one of their missions, leaving her alone without any compensation for his death He needs to get to the safety of Finland, but that is a long and arduous journey in life threatening weather conditions Now, having been able to finally get word to his colleagues in the U.S we are set for a rescue attempt that will have readers biting their nails right down to their nubs.Just as satisfying, if not so, is the highly anticipated revenge Harvath is completely hollow inside with grief, and there is not a person or force of nature on the planet who could stop him from his next mission I won t reveal the details, but can assure his fans that you will be as entertained as I was to go along for that rideCKLASH is a triumph for Brad Thor that will attain the expected bestseller status it so deserves I just hope that his other loyal readers appreciate the effort he put into this book by giving us a situation for Scot Harvath that we all hoped we would see one day, while at the same time leaving our hero a mere shell of himself with an uncertain future on his horizon We ll just have to wait for the next one.Reviewed by Ray Palen flag 3 likesLike see review Aug 05, 2019 antagonist a guy who is former Spetsnaz code named Wagner.Thor insists on making this guy a Russian some sort of obsessed fan boy of Nazi SS Seriously This just seems lazy Sure the Nazis and SS are everybody s favorite boogie man But why Russians have plenty of nasty evil people in their history that a true Russian nationalist could emulate than the guys who helped kill 27 million Russians during WWII One thing is true Russians have long memories and if for no other reason than Stalingrad, they would never worship Nazis.2 In addition to being obsessed with SS Thor also gives brief mention to Rodnovery but his description of the belief system is both insulting, and wrong on pg 64 as he introduces Wagner, he describes Rodnovery as A brutish, cultlike religion that paid homage to Nazi paganism in general and the Nazi Scutzstaffel, also known as the SS, in particular Sounds like US white supremacists to me Painting Rodnovery as a brutish cult is a little like saying all religions are defined by their most radical mutations Thus in Thor s world view, all Muslims must be terrorists and all Catholics must practice pederasty This kind of thinking and writing is dangerous, hateful and wrong.3 Spoiler alert although not much of a spoiler since it is the first thing to happen in the book.Harvarth s love Lara has a son Marco Lara is killed very very early in the book, but it isn t until very very late in the book that Marco is even mentioned If this was who he was going to build a normal life with, it seems unbelievable that so little thought or emotion is given to Lara and her son. Some other nitpicking stuff pg 106 after observing a moment of silence placed him the dead guy outside pg 108 the man outside didn t answerlooking over at the corpse Which is it Outside or inside where he can look over at him pg 280 he didn t know why, but he had felt apprehensive ever since they entered Russia Something told him he was going to need everything he had to get though this assignment Wow telegraph what happens next Poor editing if nothing else This hint is completely unnecessary 295 With the rifle slung over his shoulder Last I knew the only weapon Harvarth had at that time was a shotgun. Finally I realize these books are escapist pulp fiction One has to suspend certain belief to buy into the premise But the last eight chapters are so contrived, feel rushed and are so far beyond believablity as to make the previous 75 chapters irrelevant and meaningless. After 19 installments it may be time to retire Scot Harvarth if Thor can t commit to quality story telling flag 2 likesLike see review View 2 comments Jun 29, 2019 Sarah rated it it was amazing review of another edition Beyond Stunning Work Remembering how the last book ended, I novels the Mitch Rapp dynasty and the Scot Harvath dynasty Now the Clancy Universe tried to make Jack Ryan another such thing, but Junior ain t got the chops for the really bad ass mothers of the world Hell, Scot Harvath got so pissed over the fucking Russians killing his bride of one hour Lara Cordero Harvath that he killed and scalped every last one of the team Now that s truly bad ass left em hanging for the Spetsnaz to find and wonder So I m playing my hand right now sports fans Vince Flynn Kyle Mills and Brad Thor have the two greatest franchises in modern novel play We are now at a crossroads with Thor s Harvath, as he s without mate and needing some human understanding in the worst way Like Rapp, Harvath knows that any woman who becomes entangled with him emotionally will be killed by one of his enemies Let s compare the love lives of the two king protagonists Harvath and Tracy Hastings fell for one another saving New York City in Takedown 2006 Tracy takes a sniper round in the head outside Scot s Potomac River house in First Commandment 2007 , survives against all odds but can t endure Scot s lingering guilt over her condition So in Hidden Order 2013 he meets Lara Cordero, the hot tough Boston detective By last year s Spymaster they re living together, Scot all but adopting her son Marco Opening scene of Backlash has the two getting married in front of a bedridden Reed Carlton, after which Russian Wagner mercenaries attack and kill her Jesus, he s gotta be thinking that health certified hookers is the only way, right Rapp and liberal reporter Anna Reilly meet at the White House in Separation of Power 2001 while he s saving the residence and presidency and they hook up, finally get married In Consent to Kill 2005 a pregnant Anna gets blown up in their Chesapeake Bay house Incredibly Rapp allows the bombers, Louis Claudia Gould, to live when they name their newborn daughter Anna Interestingly, there s some subliminal allure between Mitch and Claudia, because after The Survivor 2015 they become a slowly detonating passion play following the death of Louis in Switzerland So Vince started the string and Kyle picked it up and ran with it We all wanna see Mitch and Claudia devolve into out of control lovers, and Kyle Mills has the ticket Which leads us to Scot Harvath and Brad Thor s opportunities Okay, at the end of Backlash Scot s on some Caribbean Island trying to make sense outa life after he kills his three major Russian plotters, so there s temporarily nobody stalking him Now it s time for Brad Thor to strike Lara s son Marco loves Scot like a dad, so adopting him is a no brainer But who s gonna be the hot and lucky woman I d sorta vote for Sloane Ashby if that was doable, cause she s hot and proven tougher n nails, i.e most likely to survive in Scot s world But like Clancy s Hendley Associates The Campus, the Carlton Group operators seem to be off limits to one another So.I choose the very helpful Laplander Doctor Kristina Volkova, who s hotter n a sunspot, is ten years younger than Scot, is lonely now that she s defected to the US andshe and Scot seem to be attracted, but the death of Lara s still a raw wound, and he needs a little time Go to work Brad, and do it right Oh shit, there was a storyline, right Scot Harvath and company have ruined so many plans of very important Russians that their President Peshkov secretly cuts his GRU Special Missions Unit Commander Konstantin Minayev loose snatch Harvath, squeeze all the intel out and bring him to Peshkov for killing Oh, and he wants no pushback, equating to a strong desire for plausible deniability, so Russian forces are off limits But get it done and Minayev turns into the Siberian timber baron he always dreamed of So it s time to call in Kazimir Teplov and the Wagner mercenaries sans souls I ve gotta hand it to Brad Thor for taking such a bold step at the outset of this book he decapitated The Carlton Group in one fell swoop with the Wagner mercenary attack The Old Man had Alzheimer s, but was still subject to spouting off deeply buried secrets, thus they hid him out at a nice lodge at Governors Island in Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire But offing Reed Carlton was almost a formality now killing the new boss Lydia Ryan in the same hit, then taking out Scot s new bride Lara at the same time is all but an earthquake change in the Thor enterprise How the hell he s gonna cover this is interesting it would seem the only two possible choices for taking over as Director are Harvath and Nicholas the Troll What in the name of Job are the sick players of the world gonna do with Harvath sitting behind a desk Next book will be interesting, but I diverge So the Wagner team snatches him, secretes him to Canada and fly Harvath to Murmansk, where they change planes and fly south, apparently to a quiet interrogation facility, but a bad winter storm is too much for the poorly maintained turboprop Like a scene out of Con Air , Harvath s wearing a hood and shackled when the plane soft crashes, protecting him from being thrown about like the guards and the diabolically evil Josef Ilya Kozak, Minyanev s James Bond of the dungeon He kills the survivors, then scalps the Wagner team members who d been guarding him since Governors Island, stringing them up by a knife so the Spetsnaz would know So he s free of the Con Air bird, but is over eighty kilometers from the Finnish border, equipped with snowshoes he managed to build from scraps at the wreckage site He also finds enough emergency rations to keep him fueled up for a couple of days and sets out on a trek reminiscent of Jeremiah Johnson With his last ounce of energy and Lara s spirit s guidance, he makes it into a hunter s cabin, builds a fire and begins to mend Of course he finds a snowmobile and manages to get it to start, but just as he s pushing off a pack of starving Russian wolves attack him, shredding him badly He manages to reach a village on the snowmobile, finds a closed medical clinic and helps himself to antibiotics and rabies meds But Doc Kristina Volkov ain t happy about the break in and robberybut decides to side with Scot once Keplov and his Wagner minions arrive in the town square on two Mi 8 helicopters The odds are stacking decidedly against them, but Harvath s stubbornly optimistic and incredibly well trained in the survival trade Now it s pretty damn exciting how they survive til the cavalry shows up, but it still takes some extremely heavy handed politics between the Russian and American presidents before Harvath and Kristina are safely out of Russia It s vintage Brad Thor not to allow Scot Harvath to be satisfied with only taking out most of the conspirators responsible for making little Marko an orphan Nah, he exercises for some major cash and Nicholas wailing disapproval a former Russian SVR hotter n a Russian sauna house asset ally Alexandra Ivanova to make him invisible to and in Moscow so he can do what he must Read this book, and if you re like me, you ll be slowing down as you approach the end, not wanting Backlash to end too soon Dammit, if there was a damn sequel I d buy and read it immediatement I d give this freaking book six stars if I could Damn good job Brad Thor flag 1 likeLike see review Jul 12, 2019 Steven Dawson rated it it was amazing I have to start by saying that I think this might very well be the best installment in the Scot Harvath series And it s hard for me to make a blanket statement like that because of the fact that there are so many incredible Scot Harvath books And, while I ve thoroughly enjoyed each and every one of them, this one delivered a hit to literally all the feels, and left me feeling like I was just lucky enough to have finished what may quite possibly the feels, and left me feeling like I was just lucky enough to have finished what may quite possibly be a masterpiece in the action thriller genreThere were all the same ingredients that Thor is famous for the intense high speed action, the edge of your seat cliffhanging engagements, overcoming the seemingly insurmountable, some heart wrenching lossand all with just the right amount of dark witty humor of course what sets this book apart, a notch above the rest IMO, is the heavy influx of that last ingredient the heart wrenching tear swelling loss that our protagonist is hit with and forced to deal with Right from the beginning not even a small stack of pages into the book I knew this was going to be something special as we re given an opening that starts with the loss of a few incredibly important characters in the series I honestly thought for a moment that I accidentally scrolled a few chapters ahead, because who would start the book out like this No one likes to lose a semi main character in a series you love, and to do it right off the bat Ballsy But I suppose when you re on this number in the series some of those good guys have to succumb to the hostile deadly universe that we love so much Reed Carlton hung around for a book or two longer than he probably should have though, lol And while unexpected, it certainly laid the groundwork for what turned out to be an epic adventure of perseverance, where literally all of Harvath s skills are put to the test, and we see him make his greatest stand This book takes you on a roller coaster from start to end, and has you at the edge of your seat far too many times than any one book should be allowed to You know how sometimes, when you ve been following a series for a long time and have seen the protagonist escape some pretty crazy situations, often against overwhelming odds, and every now and then you ll find yourself thinking that there s just no way out this time and surely there s no way he can write some way out of this onebut then of course, somehow he does and leaves you with your jaw on the floor Yeah, well, that happens a lot in this one, lol I couldn t put it down But that s par for the course when reading a Thor novel I guess I mean, IMO this book solidifies who the biggest badass of the thriller genre is and while TRBS may not agree, I think I ve gotta say move over Mitch RappScot Harvath is just too damn badass to rank anywhere else but the top Well done Mr Thor flag 1 likeLike see review Aug 21, 2019 Vanesa rated it liked it Good parts No recapping of the Carlton Group, Scot tests every survival skill he has and presents challenges his trainers never even imagined It makes for a bone chilling read no pun intended and had this reader very glad to be living in the hot, sunny south of the U.S.A Harvath is on his own in this God forsaken part of the world and he doesn t have any real hope that his team even knows where he is How he came to be here and how or IF he can get out of this forbidding, hostile environment is the meat of this gritty tale It is alternately terrifying and uplifting because you can t help but feel every minute success Harvath experiences in his battle to not just survive, but to live to exact revenge for the annihilation wrought by his enemies Yes, no doubt about it Scott Harvath is the epitome of an avenging angel and his wrath is fearsome.I m pleased to see Thor back on track with his hero by holding him up as an example of what s good about our society versus using him as a mouthpiece about what s wrong with our country No we re not perfect but we re always striving to be better and we have Harvath to remind us that the battle for freedom is ongoing and we should never relinquish it flag 1 likeLike see review Jul 05, 2019
